- The Adventures of Liam Leprechaun -

The Mischievous Clurichaun

Chapter 1 Summary

Liam, Colin, and Cara have achieved a great deal of success with their new store, The Treasure Within. Liam’s birthday is coming up soon. Colin and Cara ask Liam if he would like to go to the beach with them to celebrate. Liam shares that he has always been afraid of water. As he thinks about water, Liam was fidgeting with his golden coin. The coin had a four-leaf clover on one side and the words “THE ONE WHO FINDS THE THREE TREASURES BECOMES THE FOURTH” on the other. Liam had previously found his first treasure, his guiding voice, who had recently spoke from a teacup to tell him that he would soon be tested on his quest for his next treasure.

The three friends are about to open the store when Colin notices all of the shoes are missing. Colin asks Liam if this is another one of his leprechaun pranks, but Liam has no idea what has happened to the shoes. They search the entire store, but they do not find the shoes. However, they find an open window and realize that someone has taken them.

Chapter 1 Discussion

Chapter 2 Summary

Liam agrees to go to work making more shoes while Colin and Cara work the front of the store. That day was very busy, and it seemed like everyone that came in wanted shoes. When the store finally closed, Liam was terribly tired. He had never made so many shoes in one day. Cara and Colin agree to lock up the store so Liam can go home and rest. As Colin and Cara are walking home, they hear the sound of bagpipes coming from the direction of the store and decide to investigate. When they arrive back at the store, they find a leprechaun twice the size of Liam. He has enchanted the window to open when he plays his bagpipes, and now the shoes are stepping out of the window in a single file line as if someone is walking in them.

Chapter 2 Discussion

If you were working at the store, would you rather be Liam making shoes or Cara or Colin in front helping customers?

Chapter 3 Summary

Cara and Colin confront the leprechaun about stealing the shoes. He insists he is not stealing the shoes because they are walking out of their own accord. The kids keep their eyes on the leprechaun so he cannot run away. They convince him to put the shoes back, and he plays a new song on his bagpipe as the shoes march back into the store. After the shoes are back in the store and the window is locked, they tell him that he must return the shoes that he stole the previous night as well. He tells them that he cannot return them because he has already sold them. He gives them a large gold coin as payment.

Colin and Cara look very tired when they arrive at the store the next morning. They tell Liam about the leprechaun the night before. As Cara reaches into her pocket for the large gold coin, she finds that the coin has disappeared.

Chapter 3 Discussion

The leprechaun who Cara and Colin caught stealing the shoes from the store enchanted the shoes with his bagpipes. If you could enchant anything with bagpipes, what would you enchant? What if bagpipes were tough to play? How long would you practice to achieve your goal?

Chapter 4 Summary

Liam tells the kids that their encounter was not with a leprechaun but with a clurichaun. Clurichauns have a magical coin that always returns to their magical bag. They are also obsessed with grape juice. They often use their coin to get away, whenever they get caught stealing grape juice, and the coin returns to them when they have made it to safety. The kids are in for another long night. Clurichauns are nocturnal, and Liam suggests that they wait near the local grape juice cellar for the clurichaun later that evening.

Later that night, the clurichaun uses his magical coin to buy a glass of grape juice. However, one glass does not quench his thirst. He finds a flock of sheep and names one of the sheep Jimmy. The clurichaun hops on Jimmy’s back and rides toward the grape juice cellar. When he arrives at the grape juice cellar, he starts playing his bagpipes. The window to the grape juice cellar opens, and bottles of grape juice start flying out. Liam, Cara, and Colin jump out and catch the clurichaun red-handed. When Liam threatens to call the police, the clurichaun tells him that is not how he should treat family. He tells Liam that he is his Uncle Joe.

Chapter 4 Discussion

The clurichaun rides a sheep. If you could ride any animal, no matter what size, what animal would you want to ride?

Joe has a magical coin that he uses to pay for things, but it returns to his pocket after he leaves. Do you think it is stealing when Joe pays with his gold coin that always comes back? Why or why not?

Chapter 5 Summary

Liam did not think he had any family and was in disbelief because leprechauns are believed to be the unwanted offspring of fairies. The clurichaun insists that this is not the truth and that he is Liam’s Uncle Joe.

Joe explains that he had almost gone to jail for stealing grape juice and was trying to become a more honest man. Colin replies that he is not an honest man if he uses the money from selling stolen shoes to buy grape juice. Again, Joe insists that the shoes walked away of their own accord. Suddenly, a giant appears and grabs Joe. The giant claims that he caught Joe stealing his grape juice the other day. Once the gold coin that Joe gave the giant disappeared, the giant and his wife decided that Joe would make a good snack. Colin, Cara, and Liam are left speechless as the giant carries Joe away screaming.

Chapter 5 Discussion

Joe needs help to be saved from the giants, but his only hope for help is Liam, Colin, and Cara. If you were Liam, Colin, or Cara, would you help Joe? Why or why not?

Chapter 6 Summary

Cara and Colin insist that they need to help Liam’s uncle, but Liam declares that he is getting what he deserves. He won’t do anything to help. When Liam arrives home, his guiding voice speaks to him from the lamp beside his bed. The voice begs him to reconsider his actions, but Liam cannot think of any good reason to help his uncle. The voice tells him that it is his duty on the helping path to help anyone that he can. The voice also tells him that he will lose the opportunity to learn from his uncle if he does not save him. Liam declares that he does not need to learn anything from a thief. After deliberating a while longer, Liam’s guiding voice finally lets him go to sleep. Meanwhile, the giants are planning to eat Joe for breakfast with their eggs.

Chapter 7 Summary

Liam is soon asleep and begins to dream. In his dream, he meets his fairy godmother. Liam tells her that he always thought that he was an unwanted offspring of a fairy. His fairy godmother tells him that is the furthest thing from the truth. She tells him that leprechauns are very tricky creatures to raise, and they must learn important lessons on their own before meeting their family.

Liam’s fairy godmother tells him that he cannot ignore his guiding voice, or he will lose it. If he loses his guiding voice, he will never be able to find the remaining treasures. Liam states that he has no reason to help his uncle. His fairy godmother tells him that everyone deserves the help of a leprechaun. He found his first treasure by accepting who he is, and he must find his second treasure by accepting others as they are as well. When Liam judges someone and uses that judgment as a reason not to help them, he could leave them with a truly unfair fate. Everyone makes mistakes. Instead of being punished for those mistakes, we should give people the opportunity to learn from those mistakes and become better people. If he can put aside his judgment long enough to see what he can learn from Joe, he will surely save the day. Liam wakes up and knows exactly what to do.

Chapter 7 Discussion

Mistakes can be good if you learn from them. When have you made a mistake? What did you learn from it?

They climb the mountain and walk onto a window ledge. Liam pulls a long rope from his magical bag, and the three friends climb down the rope into the house. They hear Joe talking to the giant from a room down the hall. When they hear the giant leave, they slide through a large gap below the door. They find Joe tied up next to a cauldron of boiling water. As they are about to untie the last knot, the giants return and declare that they will be having a larger breakfast than they had planned.

Chapter 10 Summary

The giants tie Liam, Colin, and Cara up next to Joe. Liam points out that there is a big flaw in the giants’ plan: their hands will not fit into his bag to retrieve the gold. He convinces the giants to untie him, so he can give them the gold and see if there are any other treasures that he can share to earn their freedom. Liam grabs a giant bag of gold. It is everything that he has earned from running the store. Then, he grabs his bagpipes and plays a song for the giants to dance to in their new shoes. The giants find dancing comes with ease in their new shoes. However, when Liam stops playing the bagpipes, their feet keep moving. Liam tells them that he has enchanted the shoes with the bagpipes; a little trick that he learned from his uncle. He plays his bagpipes again, and the ropes that bind his friends come untied. As Liam, Cara, Colin, and Joe run towards the crack in the door, the giants call for their chihuahua to stop the intruders. However, the chihuahua is too late. Liam tells the giants to keep the gold as payment for the stolen grape juice. If the giants come looking for them, he will enchant everything they own with his bagpipes. Liam, Cara, Colin, and Joe escape under the crack in the door, leaving the chihuahua scratching his ears and the giants uncontrollably dancing the day away.

Joe agrees to work at The Treasure Within to pay off his debts for the stolen shoes and the gold that Liam paid the giants. Liam, Colin, and Cara agree that the best way to keep Joe out of trouble is to start selling grape juice, and they buy a local vineyard. Cara asks Liam if he has thought about what he wants to do for his birthday, and Joe suggests they all go to the beach. Liam tells Joe about his fear of water, but Joe tells Liam that leprechauns can breathe underwater and convinces him to go to the beach to celebrate his birthday.

When they arrive at the beach, Cara and Colin wear scuba gear to explore the wildlife in the water. Joe goes into the water, and Liam watches him bob up and down. After a few minutes, he realizes that Joe has not come to the surface in a while. Liam decides to brave his fear of the water to make sure his uncle is safe. When Liam goes underwater, he finds that he truly can breathe underwater. He finds Joe, who tells him he has earned his second treasure. They head to the edge of an underwater cliff and find Cara and Colin with hundreds of leprechauns and clurichauns. Liam finally meets his family, and he has never been happier.
